My art hobby got real after I embraced existentialism
Philosophers say we make our own meaning. I stopped painting for others and now it means something to me.

Did the_ivan's buddy really need to quit the band completely? Sometimes you can just drop the act and play for yourself instead. You don't always have to leave, you just have to change why you're there.

My buddy quit his band once he stopped trying to please the crowd.

Sounds like your buddy hit a wall with the whole performance thing. Once you stop caring what people think, the reason for playing changes completely. For some, music becomes a job instead of a passion when you're just ticking boxes for the audience. Quitting might be the only way to get back to why you started in the first place. Otherwise, you're just a human jukebox with worse tips.

Totally! I've seen this happen with a friend who plays guitar. What helped him was booking one tiny gig where he only played for his best friend in the room. It stripped away that need to please a big crowd and he remembered the fun of just making sound. Sometimes you gotta trick your brain back into the joy of it.
