Rant: A podcast suggestion made family game night super weird

My cousin put on a true crime podcast during our board games. Now everyone's on edge and it killed the vibe. Need some lighthearted podcast ideas for next time, any tips?

Was it really that serious?

What if that tension @the_robin mentioned makes people avoid future gatherings? Then it's not just serious, it's damaging family time.

You said it killed the vibe, but mixing in a true crime podcast can actually make game night more interesting. That edge you felt might have added some real tension to the games, which isn't always a bad thing. Family time doesn't always need to be lighthearted to be meaningful. Your cousin was trying to share something they care about, and that's part of bonding. Sometimes stepping out of the comfort zone creates the best memories. Give it another shot before you switch back to just happy topics.

Our family tried that exact thing last Thanksgiving with a serial killer documentary playing during cards. My aunt left the room and my teenage cousin had nightmares. Game night is one of the few times we all agree to leave the world's darkness at the door. Forcing a true crime story on everyone isn't bonding, it's ignoring basic comfort levels. That kind of tension doesn't make games fun, it just makes people want to leave. We stick to light topics because we actually want to enjoy each other's company.
