The $2 waffle iron that ate my breakfast, but wait

Found a vintage waffle maker at a garage sale in Dayton for $2, got it home and the nonstick coating flaked into my batter on the very first use. Do I strip it down and re-season it like cast iron, or is this thing just a display piece now? Has anyone salvaged one of these old electric ones?
