The comment about my shed's 'character' changed how I see it
Last month my neighbor Bill came over while I was staining the front door of my 8x10 shed and said it had a lot of character. I thought he was being polite because the trim is slightly crooked from where I cut it on a rainy Tuesday with a jigsaw that wandered. But then he pointed at the seams and said real builders leave marks that tell a story. I spent the last 3 weekends trying to fix every little flaw, and hearing that made me stop obsessing. Now I look at that one warped corner where the plywood cuped, and I remember the excitement of getting the frame up before dark. I even left the pencil line on the door jamb where I marked the hinge depth. Has anyone else ever had a visitor say something that made them accept their shed's imperfections instead of tearing it apart again?
Man, I read somewhere that old Japanese pottery places actually glue the broken pieces back with gold and show off the cracks on purpose. Blew my mind a little. Bill sounds like he gets it, that warped corner is basically your shed's birthmark.
