Our shop switched to all flux-core for outdoor work, and I'm not on board
The boss at our local metal shop decided last week that from now on, every outdoor project gets flux-core wire to save time and money. All the other guys are thrilled because it means less gear to haul around, but I've been welding in this coastal area long enough to know better. Just yesterday, I cut out a section of railing from the pier that was done with flux-core three seasons back, and the salt air had caused deep pits right along the weld seams. In my experience, using MIG with a gas shield gives a much tighter, cleaner joint that stands up to the weather here. Yes, it costs a bit more for the cylinder rental, but the repair bills down the road are worse. I brought my photos from the pier job to the morning break huddle, but they just shrugged and said the new rule speeds up paydays. It bugs me because we're known for solid work in this town, and this feels like cutting corners that will come back to haunt us.
