Tried rewilding my tiny backyard in Portland and just got more weeds

Honestly, I spent like $200 on native wildflower seeds and plugs last spring, following some online guide for urban rewilding. I cleared out the lawn, scattered everything, and watered it for weeks. What came up was mostly crabgrass and thistles, with maybe three actual flowers. Did I do something wrong with the timing, or is this just how it goes when you try to fight the grass without chemicals?

My grandma's front lawn turned into a desert in 5 years

I visited her house in Phoenix last week and noticed the grass is completely gone just bare dirt now. She said the HOA stopped watering the common areas after the drought rules kicked in back in 2019. Has anyone else watched a whole neighborhood's landscaping just vanish like that?

Switched to native plants in my Detroit backyard last spring and the difference is wild

I got tired of fighting with a lawn that needed constant water and fertilizer to stay green through July. Tore out 400 square feet of grass and put in wildflowers and shrubs that grow naturally around here. Has anyone else tried replacing their lawn with local plants and seen a big drop in water bills?

My uncle told me buying carbon offsets was a waste, and after I spent $400 on them I feel like he had a point.

He said most of those programs just plant trees that die in five years, and sure enough the company I used got sued for fraud last month. Has anyone actually found a offset program that holds up long term?

Tried growing my own veggies for the first time this spring, ended up with a compost bin full of squash bugs

Planted three zucchini plants in April thinking I'd save on groceries, but by June every leaf had bugs eating through them and I spent more on diatomaceous earth than I did on zucchini at the store. Has anyone else had their garden dreams crushed by pests they didn't even know existed?

I finally broke my rain barrel last week and honestly it was my fault

I live in Portland and have this 55 gallon barrel under my downspout. Last Tuesday after a heavy storm I went to check it and the spigot just cracked off. Water everywhere. I got mad at first but then realized I left it full over winter and the ice probably did the damage. So I ordered a thicker one with a brass valve this time. Anyone else deal with stuff breaking because you didn't prep for the seasons right?

Hit 500 miles on my bike commuting this year and it messed with my head

I started biking to work back in March just to save on gas money. Yesterday my odometer hit 500 miles for the year. That's like biking from here in Austin to El Paso. I keep thinking about all the car trips I didn't take and how much CO2 I didn't dump into the air. But then I wonder if it even matters when corporations are doing way worse damage. Has anyone else hit a weird personal milestone that made you feel both proud and useless at the same time?

The creek behind my apartment complex is barely a trickle now compared to 5 years ago

I moved into this place in 2019 and the creek behind it was like a solid 4 feet wide with actual minnows swimming around. Now after 3 straight summers of drought and the town pumping more groundwater, it's maybe a foot wide and smells like rotten eggs half the time. I know it's just one small creek but it freaks me out to see the change happen in real time. Anyone else got a spot near them that's drying up or changing way faster than you expected?

My grandpa told me plastic would 'last forever' back in the 80s

He was right about the plastic Part but wrong about it being a good thing. We used to go fishing on the river near our town and he'd say that about every bottle we tossed. Now I see those same types of bottles washed up on the bank 40 years later, still perfectly intact. Has anyone else had an older relative say something that seemed fine at the time but now feels totally different?

Can we talk about how plastic recycling labels are basically a lie?

I was sorting my trash last Tuesday and actually looked at the bottom of a yogurt container. It had that chasing arrows symbol with a 5 inside, and I thought oh good this can be recycled. But when I checked my city's recycling guide, number 5 plastics aren't accepted here at all. So that little triangle is basically just marketing to make us feel better about buying plastic. Has anyone else dug into what their local facility actually takes?

Just realized my recycling bin was full of wishcycling mistakes

My neighbor who works at the local waste facility in Portland told me I was tossing things in the recycling that were actually contaminating the whole batch. Why does nobody talk about how much more plastic we use now than 10 years ago?

I was cleaning out my garage last weekend and found an old grocery bag from 2014. It had like 4 things in it. Now every single thing I buy at the store comes wrapped in plastic. Even the bananas have a plastic sleeve sometimes. I remember my mom used to buy milk in glass bottles from the local dairy. Now the same milk comes in a plastic jug that'll be around for 400 years. I switched to reusable bags and bulk buying 6 months ago after seeing that youtube video of the dead whale, but it's so hard to avoid. Has anyone else noticed this just creeping up on us over the last decade?

Tried a 'rewilding' patch in my backyard and got a nasty surprise

I set aside a 10x10 area in my yard last spring, stopped mowing it, and planted some native wildflowers from a kit I found online. Thought it would be a cute little ecosystem for bees and butterflies. Instead my neighbor complained to the city about 'neglected vegetation' and I got a $75 fine and a notice to clean it up within 2 weeks. The creek behind my house turned orange last spring and I can't stop thinking about it

I live up near Boone, North Carolina, and there's a little creek that runs through the back of my property. Last April after a heavy rain, the water turned a bright orange color for about three days. I tested the pH and it was down around 4.5, which I think is from old mine runoff getting stirred up. Has anyone else noticed weird changes in local water sources that seem to be getting worse?

Vent: saw a photo of my grandparents' creek from 1985 and barely recognized it today

I was going through old family photos last night and found a picture of my grandpa fishing in this creek behind their house in rural Iowa. The water was clear, you could see the bottom, and there were trees all along the banks. Today that same creek is a muddy ditch with barely a foot of water in it, and most of the trees are gone. My aunt said the neighboring farm started using heavier fertilizer about 10 years ago and the runoff just killed everything. Has anyone else seen a local waterway change that fast?
