I stopped mowing half my yard in Phoenix last spring, and the heat did something I did not expect
Last April I left the back strip of my yard unmowed on purpose, just to see what would take over after two weeks of 100 degree days. The bermuda grass died back fast and a bunch of native stuff moved in, plus the ground stayed about 10 degrees cooler when I checked it with my cheap infrared thermometer. The bad part is the rabbits came back, and now the whole block has them digging under fences. The city water bill for that zone dropped from $71 to $44 that month, so I am not going back to the old way. Anyone else in the southwest let their lawn go and get a surprise visitor problem?
Saved forty bucks a month but now you get rabbits destroying fences and your neighbors probably hate you. Dead grass costs nothing to fix, but a rabbit problem on the whole block never goes away.
