Just realized my recycling bin was full of wishcycling mistakes

My neighbor who works at the local waste facility in Portland told me I was tossing things in the recycling that were actually contaminating the whole batch. Turns out greasy pizza boxes and those plastic clamshell containers from the deli aren't recyclable here. She said like 25% of what people put in their bins ends up in the trash anyway. Anyone else get called out for bad recycling habits?

Twenty five percent? That is a lot higher than I would have guessed. I thought maybe ten percent at most ended up in the landfill from wishcycling. Makes you wonder how much effort we are all wasting.

Honestly just check the number on the bottom of your plastics before tossing them, saves so much hassle lol.

yeah but @angela_harris i kind of wonder if it even matters that much, like if you're careful with recycling most of the time a few extra plastics probably won't tip the scales. idk maybe it's just me but i feel like people stress way too hard over perfect recycling when the real problem is companies making stuff that can't be recycled in the first place.
