My cousin laughed at me for sorting our recycling at her BBQ last month
She said 'you know most of that just ends up in the same landfill anyway right?' and now I can't stop thinking about whether I've been wasting my time for 10 years with those blue bins. Does anyone actually know what happens to our recycling after the truck picks it up?

honestly your cousin is half right about some places sending stuff to landfills but that doesnt mean recycling is useless. it depends on where you live some cities actually process it properly and others are just pretending. the big issue is contamination if you throw greasy pizza boxes in there it ruins entire batches. i used to work at a sorting facility for like a month and trust me its a mess but you're not wasting your time if you do it right.

Man, "half right"??? That's wild to me because I've been standing by my bins like a weirdo for years, and now I'm finding out some cities are just pretending? Like, they have the trucks and the sorting facility and the whole deal, but it's basically a smoke show? I was telling my neighbor last week about washing out my peanut butter jars (which takes forever, by the way) and she just nodded. Now I'm wondering if her city is one of the fakers. The pizza box thing is depressing too because I thought I was being eco-conscious by putting them in there, not realizing I'm just messing up the whole math for everyone else.
