My dad and I used to count stars from our porch. Now, the sky is just orange.
When I was a kid, my dad and I would sit outside and pick out stars every night. Today, the glow from streetlights and houses washes out most of them. Some say this light waste is a small issue compared to things like car pollution. Others believe that losing our night skies hurts both animals and our sense of wonder. For example, birds get confused by bright lights and crash into windows. I'm stuck between letting it go or pushing for rules to use softer, directed lights. How do you all see this trade-off between bright nights and a healthy planet?

Lost stars are a real cost. That orange sky means we messed up. Dark sky rules aren't about going back, they're about smarter light now. We can have safe streets and still see the universe. Fighting for that feels worth it.

It feels like we keep trading away quiet, natural beauty for more convenience without even noticing.

Start with a small patch in your yard and just watch what grows there for a week. Pulling a few weeds by hand forces you to notice the bugs and birds that show up. It sounds silly, but that tiny bit of regular, quiet time outside builds a habit of looking closer. You start to see the little bits of nature that are still there, even next to all the convenience.
