My kid asked why the maple out front is bare in October and I had no good answer
Three years ago that tree in our yard in Dayton held red leaves until Thanksgiving, and this year it dropped everything by the second week of September. I keep hearing it's just a dry summer, but my neighbor's been watering his nonstop and his looks the same. Is anyone else seeing trees go bare weeks early, or is it just my street?
Did you check if that maple is one of the ones that turns early no matter what, like a red maple versus a sugar maple? We had a similar thing in our neighborhood and it turned out half the trees dropping early were red maples, which always quit sooner than the sugars do. The odd part is the timing moving up every year, not just the dry spell. Our street lost its color two weeks ahead of schedule too, and the watered lawns made zero difference. Maybe the heat at night is the real culprit since trees use cool nights to start shutting down for winter. If the nights stay warm, the whole clock gets pushed forward and the leaves bail out early.
