My neighbor swears her backyard birds are coming back but she started feeding them in October
I keep hearing people in my town say the birds are fine because their feeders are full, but winter feeding just pulls birds in from miles around, it doesn't mean the local nesting pairs made it. A wildlife guy at the nature center near me pointed out that chickadee counts in our area are down almost a third since 2019, and the feeder crowd hides that. How do you all keep from fooling yourselves with the easy signs?
