My neighbor's kid asked me why the creek behind our houses is always brown now, and I didn't have a good answer.

You're right about the straight lines, that's what got me too. I always figured it was just runoff until I saw how weirdly square it looked.

But mud doesn't explain the shape at all. It looks way too structured, like straight lines and right angles you just don't get from natural erosion. If it was just mud, you'd see more slumping and messy edges, not something that boxy. The color seems off for the area too, it doesn't match the other soil patches nearby. There's a real chance it's something more.

Check old property maps, maybe @spencer_coleman, for a filled-in foundation or septic tank.
