Showerthought: I think people are wrong about the 'doom' around the Great Barrier Reef
Everyone keeps sharing those bleached coral pictures from 2016, but the 2024 report from the Australian Institute of Marine Science shows a 33% increase in hard coral cover in the northern section. It's not all good news, but the constant 'it's all dead' narrative makes people feel helpless when recovery is actually possible with action. Has anyone else looked at the recent data and felt a bit less hopeless?

Noticed the same thing with other stuff. News only shows the worst car crash, never the fender bender everyone walked away from. Makes you think everything's totaled. Good to see some numbers that aren't all bad for once.

My local news did a whole week on potholes last year. Not one story about the thousands of miles of smooth road we all drive on every day. It's like they think good news is a secret we're not supposed to know.

Why not try a local good news site for a change?

Has anyone looked at what tourism dollars actually do for reef conservation? Like, the scuba trips and glass bottom boats fund a lot of the monitoring and cleanup efforts. The doom narrative might be scaring away the very thing keeping parts of it alive.
