That $250 air purifier I bought stopped working after 3 months
I got this fancy unit from an online ad back in June because the wildfire smoke was brutal here in Portland. The fan just quit last week with no warning, and the company's support line is a loop of automated messages. Has anyone else had luck fixing these things on their own, or am I stuck tossing a broken machine into the landfill?

Changed my mind after reading that, never thought to check for dead things.

That part about it "stopping with no warning" makes me think it might be something simple. Most of these purifiers have a thermal cut-off switch that trips if the motor gets too hot, especially after running for months in wildfire smoke. Before you chuck it, try unplugging it for a full 24 hours to let any internal safety reset do its thing. Also pop off the front cover and clean the motor intake with a vacuum - sometimes a thick layer of ash and dust is enough to block the fan blades from spinning.

My neighbor's air filter did the exact same thing last summer, Betty, and we found a dead mouse wedged against the fan inside the housing, completely blocking the blades. We vacuumed everything out and let it sit unplugged for a day, and it's been running fine ever since, no more weird smells or sudden stops. Always pays to check for physical blockages before giving up on an expensive appliance.
