The recycling bin at my apartment has a sign that makes zero sense
Last Tuesday I went to toss a pizza box in the recycling chute and the sign said 'no cardboard, no paper, no plastic, no glass, no metal.' So basically just food scraps? I asked the super and he shrugged, said the hauler charges extra if anything's contaminated so they'd rather collect nothing. But then the bins sit half empty and we're all just tossing everything in the trash anyway. How do you guys handle apartment recycling rules that basically ban recycling? Does your building even bother?

My building has a compost bin that nobody uses because the super locked it after someone threw a bag of dog poop in there. Now the sign just says "organic waste only" but the lock is still on it, so it's basically a sculpture at this point. Same vibe though, the rules are so strict nobody can actually follow them so everyone just gives up. City tried to fine us once for putting a yogurt cup in the trash instead of recycling, but the recycling bin literally had a sign saying no plastic. Super wrote "please refer to previous sign" on a sticky note and taped it to the fine. We framed that note and hung it in the laundry room.
