Why does nobody talk about how much more plastic we use now than 10 years ago?
I was cleaning out my garage last weekend and found an old grocery bag from 2014. It had like 4 things in it. Now every single thing I buy at the store comes wrapped in plastic. Even the bananas have a plastic sleeve sometimes. I remember my mom used to buy milk in glass bottles from the local dairy. Now the same milk comes in a plastic jug that'll be around for 400 years. I switched to reusable bags and bulk buying 6 months ago after seeing that youtube video of the dead whale, but it's so hard to avoid. Has anyone else noticed this just creeping up on us over the last decade?

...and I swear the plastic is multiplying in my pantry when I'm not looking. I started trying to cut back a few years back, and now my cupboards look like a failed science experiment with all the mismatched glass jars I'm hoarding. But honestly, my problem is I'm too cheap to buy the fancy unpackaged stuff at the health food store, so I end up buying the plastic-wrapped bargain and then feeling guilty about it. My husband jokes that the only plastic-free thing in our house is me, since I'm old enough to remember when you could buy eggs loose in a paper bag. Anyway, I think a lot of people just got used to it without really noticing, like the way you don't notice your floors getting dirty until someone points out the crumbs.

...man, I feel this so hard. I had the exact same moment a few months back when I tried to buy just a single onion and it came in this little plastic mesh bag tied with a twist tie... like, what's the point even? I've been trying to do the bulk thing too but sometimes it feels like you have to be a detective just to find one item without a wrapper. Really bums me out.

Honestly I think the plastic thing is overblown. Glass bottles are heavy and break. Milk in glass costs more to ship and the carbon footprint is worse because trucks burn more fuel hauling the weight. My grandma used glass milk bottles and she had to scrub them out with a brush. Now I toss the jug in the recycling bin and move on with my day. I'll take a plastic-wrapped cucumber over the alternative of it getting bruised and wasted.
