A client told me my interview questions were 'too predictable' and it stung

They said my 'tell me about yourself' opener was boring. I switched to asking about a specific project they're proud of instead. What's your best first question?

What if predictable isn't always bad? I've had candidates freeze up on creative questions and just want a normal start. Sometimes a simple opener lets everyone relax first.

Had a candidate last month who looked ready to pass out. Susanb34 is right. We switched to basic stuff like "walk me through your resume" and he totally turned it around. Got the job. Sometimes you just need to let people be normal first.

Totally get wanting to help people relax. The thing is, asking someone to walk you through their resume isn't actually a simple or normal question. It's a huge, open-ended task that puts all the pressure on them to perform. A real simple opener is more like confirming their start date at their last job or asking what they know about the team. Small, factual stuff that builds a bit of comfort before the real talk begins.

What's the worst opener you've gotten?
