That little hook has an intentional wiggle for a reason though. It lets you hook over a nail head or butt up against a surface and still get an accurate measurement.

Bet you looked at that little metal hook and thought it was broken too. Classic. For thirty years you were adding an inch when you should have been subtracting it. Reminds me of that time I realized I'd been hammering with the claw side for two decades.
