Can we talk about a comment I heard at the hardware store about asking for help?

A guy buying paint in line behind me told his friend, 'The trick is to just ask the specific question, not the big scary one,' and I've been applying that to everything from my car's weird rattle to my taxes.

Right? That's such a solid life hack.

Totally get what you mean, @wesleyb20. Used to think that kind of stuff was just common sense, not a real hack. But seeing it in action changed my mind. Like using binder clips to organize cables or putting a damp paper towel under a cutting board to stop it from sliding. Simple fixes that just work every time.

But what if the big scary question is the only real one you have?

My friend tried this asking the specific question thing at the DMV last week. He walked up and just asked "which form do I need for a lost registration" instead of the whole rambling story about how his dog ate it and he moved three times. The lady handed him the form in five seconds and he was out the door before I even found parking. Sometimes the little questions really do get you further.
