Those old forum threads you're talking about, I remember spending three days on one about the physics of a slinky once. People still dig into deep stuff, they just do it in Discord servers or subreddits where the algorithm doesn't push hot takes to the top. The curiosity didn't die, the platform just shifted from slow boards to faster feeds where it's harder to find the quiet corners.
