Debate: Is the Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut worth the $30 ticket or overhyped?

I went to the Mystic Aquarium last Saturday and noticed two totally different experiences happening. Half the crowd was glued to the beluga whales like they were celebrities, while the other half was complaining about the small tank sizes and lack of big fish. Is it really a solid day out for the price or just a tourist trap that relies on those white whales? What did you think when you visited there?

Did you notice if the people complaining about tank sizes had been to other aquariums before? I ask because Mystic is weirdly middle ground - it's bigger than a roadside fish tank place but nowhere near the scale of Atlanta or Monterey. Wondering if the disappointment comes from comparing it to the big dogs or if the tanks genuinely feel cramped even for a midsize spot.

Totally agree with what @nathan901 was getting at about the beluga show being the main event. If you go in expecting a massive ocean experience like Baltimore, you'll leave disappointed. My advice is to just focus on the whales and the outdoor exhibits, grab a cheap lunch beforehand, and you'll get your money's worth.

My buddy @parker_palmer44 took his kids there last fall and said the beluga show stole the whole visit, but his wife spent half the time staring at the seal tank thinking it looked too small. He said the place felt crowded even on a Tuesday and the food prices made him wince, so $30 felt high for what you got. Guess it really depends if you're there for the whales or expecting a full aquarium experience like Boston or Baltimore.
