I compared asking one big question versus a bunch of small ones in a forum...

Last month I posted a huge, messy question about engine codes and got zero replies... but breaking it into three simple posts got answers in a day. What's the best way you've found to get a real answer on here?

That thing you said about one big post "just looks like homework" really hit for me. I actually read a forum tips blog once that said people have a mental limit on how much text they'll read before their brain just tunes out. Something like 150 words is the sweet spot for getting replies. And @jasonallen, I hear you on having the opposite happen, but maybe it depends on the forum or what you're asking about. For technical stuff like engine codes or car noises, nobody wants to dig through a paragraph to find the actual problem. Breaking it down lets people pick the part they actually know something about instead of feeling like they gotta solve your whole life. That's why those three small posts worked, you gave people easy wins.

Totally, breaking it down works every time. I did the same thing last week asking about a weird noise my car was making, just like @gracec16 said, you gotta keep it simple. One big post just looks like homework and people scroll right past. Three small ones feel easy to answer.
