Lost $80 on a fake leather repair kit that ruined my couch cushions
Bought this highly rated kit off Amazon for $80 and now I've got crusty peeling patches on both armrests - has anyone actually found a leather repair product that doesn't make things worse?

Stick with a real upholstery shop next time.

Yeah, "real upholstery shop" is a kind way of putting it. I once tried to re-cover my grandma's old armchair with a bedsheet and a staple gun, and it ended up looking like a sad, lumpy ghost after a pillow fight. The arms poofed out weird and the back was all puckered. Lesson learned: stick to people who actually know what a welt cord is.

Try wiping the area down with rubbing alcohol first to get any residue off, then hit it with a color-matched leather dye from a brand like Fiebing's. I had the same crusty disaster on my car seats after using a repair kit, and the dye actually blended in pretty well after I buffed it with a microfiber cloth. Just go super thin coats and let it dry between each one or it'll look worse.
