My dad swore by putting a potato in the oven when roasting chicken, I called him crazy for years

Last Thanksgiving I was making my first solo bird and remembered him saying it keeps the meat moist. Threw a russet in the cavity just to prove him wrong. Thing is, that chicken came out perfect. Juicy, tender, the whole deal. I still don't get the science but now I do it every time. Anyone else got a weird family cooking trick they resisted forever?

Like just shoved it in the cavity" - are you telling me people take it back out? I've been serving my family potato stuffing for years without realizing it.

Wait hold on, you actually put a whole raw potato in there? Like just shoved it in the cavity and baked it?

ruby_henderson36, wait WHAT. A whole raw potato just chilling inside the bird? I'm honestly amazed. That sounds like a texture disaster waiting to happen. I can't even imagine how that turned out.
