My offhand joke at a wedding killed the vibe

The maid of honor was giving a long, sweet speech that had everyone bored. I yelled out a silly line to get a laugh, and it just made everything awkward. People stared at me, and the couple looked seriously annoyed. I'm starting to think you should never try to be funny at someone else's big moment unless you're asked. Have you ever totally misread a room like that?

Apologized the next day and bought them a nice bottle of wine.

Should've apologized that night, not next day.

Did you get a chance to apologize right after, or did you wait? I did something similar at my cousin's wedding, trying to cut the tension during a really slow speech. The silence after my joke was brutal. I found that saying sorry to the couple that same night, and then sending a card with a gift card for a dinner out, really helped smooth things over. It showed I knew I messed up their moment. What did you end up saying when you apologized?

That gift card idea is smart because it moves past just words. A real apology should cost you something, even a small amount, to show you get the weight of the mistake. It turns a sorry into a real action.
