My phone screen cracked from a drop of 2 feet onto carpet of all things

I was just sitting on my couch last Thursday, scrolling through some forum posts, and I dropped my phone. I'm talking a 2 foot fall max, right onto the carpet. I've dropped this thing from way higher onto concrete and it was fine. But nope, one weird angle and the corner hit just right, and now there's a spiderweb crack across the top left. I've got a tempered glass screen protector on it, but I guess those don't cover the whole screen? The crack goes right past the edge. So now I'm stuck using it with a cracked screen until I can afford to get it fixed. I'm looking at like $150 for a replacement screen on this model. Has anyone else had a phone break from a totally nothing fall like that?

Happened to me last year with my old Galaxy. Dropped it off the arm of a recliner onto thin office carpet. Cracked the screen in the corner just like you described. Its always that one unlucky angle that does it. I went the DIY route with a kit off Amazon and a heat gun to save some cash. Did you look into third party repair shops instead of going through the manufacturer? They usually charge way less for the same fix.

...and honestly that's the thing that gets me, it's never the big drops that do it. Tbh I've yeeted my phone across a parking lot by accident once and it just bounced, not even a scratch. But the other day I was getting out of my car and it slipped from like knee height onto grass, soft grass, and now there's this hairline crack running diagonal across the whole screen. I swear they design these things to break at the most random angles. Ngl I'm just using it as is for now too, cause $150 is a lot when I'm already paying for groceries and gas. I've got a friend who tried the DIY kit and he said it worked okay but the touch sensitivity was never the same after, so now I'm scared to even try that route.

Huh, that's the thing though, I've actually had the exact opposite luck. I dropped my old iPhone down a flight of stairs once and it was fine, but then I paid $200 for a pro repair and the screen started ghost touching a month later. Maybe the grass crack was just bad luck with the glass composition? I know some folks swear by the DIY kits but I've heard more bad stories than good, especially with the adhesive not sealing right. Sometimes I wonder if the $150 is worth it for peace of mind even if it stings.
