That gas station museum in Tucumcari I still think about

Stopped for gas on a road trip last month and there was this tiny attached museum with old Route 66 photos and a 1950s soda fountain that was still working. The owner let me try a cherry phosphate for $2 and told me how the highway bypass killed his business in the 70s. I only meant to be there five minutes but ended up staying an hour just looking at all the postcards people mailed from that spot. Has anyone else found random roadside places that stuck with you way longer than they should have?

Four dollars and thirty minutes is exactly why I stopped going down that stretch of 66. Everyone talks about the charm of those places but nobody mentions the owner standing over you while you read his faded newspaper clippings about the bypass. I hit one of those spots near Kingman where the guy kept a binder of every car that ever broke down in front of his shop since 1962. It wasn't charming, it was a guy who never moved on and wanted me to feel guilty about it. Glad you got a good phosphate out of yours, but those museums always felt more like a warning than a welcome to me. Did he charge you extra for the stories or was that part of the $2?
