That time I spent 6 hours fixing a leaky faucet because I skipped the $3 part

I thought I could replace a bathroom faucet in under an hour. Three trips to Home Depot later and I was still staring at a puddle. The problem was a tiny rubber gasket that I didn't think mattered. I wasted a whole Saturday wrestling with pliers and YouTube tutorials. Finally gave in and bought a full replacement kit for $12. The job took 20 minutes after that. Has anyone else had a simple DIY job turn into an all day nightmare for a stupid reason?

Ditch the silicone grease and hope for the best, or was there another shortcut you took?

My buddy tried that same thing on his old truck. He figured a little extra grease couldn't hurt, but it ended up making a huge mess everywhere. The gasket slipped sideways and he had to take the whole thing apart again. Took him a whole Saturday to clean it all up and start over properly. Not a shortcut worth taking.
