A founder's 3 AM truth bomb shook my whole hiring plan

Met a guy who runs a dev shop off East 6th last Friday. Told me he stopped hiring for culture fit entirely. Said it's code for hiring people just like you, which kills teams in 18 months. He hires for specific skills and lets the personality stuff sort itself out. I've been stuck on finding 'the right vibe' for my own startup for weeks. His math was simple: 3 bad culture hires cost him $40k each. Has anyone else ditched the culture fit checklist and gone pure skill?

Whoa, okay, that guy sounds like he's been through the wringer, but I gotta say, I'm not totally buying the whole "culture fit is a scam" thing. Like, yeah, hiring three clones of yourself is dumb, that's a real problem. But throwing out the whole idea because one guy got burned? That feels a little extreme. You can still hire for skills and not hire a total jerk who makes everyone else want to quit, you know? The real issue is probably that his "culture fit" was actually "someone who stays late and never complains," and that's a whole different beast than just having a decent personality. I think there's a middle ground here, where you check for basic decency and shared work values, but you don't need everyone to love the same podcasts.

Agree with you on finding that middle ground. That guy's story sounds painful, but skills alone won't stop someone from dragging the whole team down with negativity. Basic respect and shared goals matter, just not needing to be best friends with everyone.
