Appreciation post: My kitchen fix went better with a local crew than a tech service
I just redid my kitchen here in Austin. Lots of people in tech say to use app-based repair services, but my small local team was faster and cheaper. Do you think Austin tech companies are missing what local businesses offer?

Honestly, the app services saved me last year. Booked a plumber in twenty minutes, got upfront pricing, and the work was guaranteed. My local guy was always "too busy" and the bill was a surprise every time. Tech companies are fixing the old-school problems of scheduling and trust.

Yeah but that upfront price is often the lowest bid, so they cut corners to make it work. I've seen jobs where an app contractor used the wrong mulch depth or skipped soil prep because the flat rate didn't cover it. Like @matthewdixon said, a neighbor's recommendation usually means someone who takes pride in the work, not just racing to the next app booking. The trust comes from doing the job right, not just because a company's logo is on their shirt.

Found my local handyman through a neighbor's recommendation last month.

My uncle in Toledo still uses the same handyman who fixed his porch in 1998. That guy knows every creak in that house. An app can't build that kind of history. What happens when you need a weird, one-off repair and the platform just doesn't have a category for it? Sometimes the old way is just about knowing a person who knows your home.
