Had to pick between two Austin tech events last week and it was a real choice
One was a big, free networking mixer downtown, and the other was a small, paid workshop on B2B sales for SaaS. I went with the workshop, which cost $75. It was only 15 people, but I got actual advice I could use right away, not just business cards. Has anyone else found the smaller events here are more worth the time?

Honestly that "actual advice you could use right away" part is so true. I read a blog post that said free events are for collecting contacts, paid ones are for collecting skills. Tbh I've had the same experience here.

My gym's free yoga class is packed with people chatting after, but the paid workshop had maybe ten people actually learning advanced poses. It's like the money filters out anyone who isn't serious about the skill part. You see it with online courses too, the free ones have huge forums but the paid cohorts get real work done.

Remember when my buddy paid for that coding meetup? He said the small group actually helped him fix his project, unlike the free pizza crowd.
