Hot take: That Salesforce migration tool saved us time but cost us way more than we planned
I spent 3 months moving our customer data over to a new CRM platform back in April. The tool we used, DataLoader Pro, promised a 2-week setup but my team ended up wrestling with field mapping for 6 weeks. Turns out the $200 tool didn't handle our custom objects at all, and we had to rewrite half the scripts. Has anyone else found that these migration tools hide their real costs until you're already in the thick of it?

Hear me out @wren638 but I actually see it the other way. Those tools are not hiding costs, they are just being honest about what they can and can't do from the start. If you look at the documentation for any migration tool, it clearly says custom fields and objects need extra work. That's not a hidden cost, it's just the nature of the job. Your buddy Mark paying $800 for consulting sounds like he skipped reading the fine print about what the tool actually handles. The promise of "2 weeks setup" is always a best case scenario for simple data. Nobody should expect a $200 tool to magically understand their weird custom property fields without some extra effort. Maybe the real problem is that people buy the cheapest option first instead of actually planning out what their data looks like before jumping in.

My buddy Mark tried a similar migration tool for his real estate agency last fall. He paid $350 upfront for it but then spent another $800 on consulting to stitch together the data transfers for his custom property fields. The whole thing took him 10 weeks instead of the 4 weeks they promised.
