I just saw the average tech salary in Austin and wow
I was reading a report from the Austin Chamber of Commerce the other day, and it said the average tech salary here is over $140,000. That's way more than I thought, especially when you see the cost of housing. It's crazy to think that's the norm for a lot of people in this town now. I fix cars for a living and that number just doesn't feel real sometimes. Does that pay actually feel like enough with how expensive everything has gotten?

Ever wonder where that extra money actually goes after taxes and student loans? That big number gets a lot smaller fast, and then you're still trying to save for a house that costs three times what it did five years ago. It can feel like enough to live on but not enough to get ahead, which is its own kind of stress. The real trick is figuring out your own budget based on your actual take-home pay, not the headline number.

That report is a bit misleading. It's an average, not the norm. Gets skewed by a few huge salaries at the top. A lot of tech workers, especially early in their career, are making way less than that. Median salary would tell a different story.

This happens with house prices and test scores too, always painting a rosier picture.

You might try tracking where every dollar actually goes for a month using something like a notebook or a basic spreadsheet. It helped me see where I was bleeding money without realizing it, and then I could cut back on the little things that added up quickly.
