Spent 2 years chasing VC money before a random talk with a bootstrapped SaaS owner at a coffee shop on Congress made me realize I was optimizing for the wrong metric the whole time
He showed me his MRR chart which was half of mine but his profit margins were actually triple, and then asked me if I even knew my cost per customer acquisition off the top of my head which I definitely didn't, has anyone else here built a profitable Austin business without outside cash?

Yeah that story hits HARD. So many of us get caught up chasing vanity metrics like MRR when we should be looking at actual profit and unit economics. Cost per customer acquisition is the one thing nobody wants to talk about because it shows how leaky their business really is. Bootstrapped founders have this clarity that VC funded folks often lose somewhere along the way.

is it really that serious though? like yeah vanity metrics are dumb but acting like cost per customer acquisition is some dark secret nobody wants to talk about feels a little dramatic. most people who have run a small business for more than a year already know their numbers or they learn real fast when they run out of money. and bootstrapped vs vc funded thing gets old too. some of the best run businesses i've seen are vc backed and some bootstrapped ones are burning cash on dumb stuff. it's almost like people run their businesses differently and there's no one right way to do it.
