That vendor showcase at Capital Factory last fall split my team on open office vs private desks

I went to this big tech business meetup at Capital Factory back in October 2023, and two founders got into it over office layouts. One guy said his team of 15 people doubled their code output after switching to all open seating with no assigned desks. But the other lady argued her startup lost three engineers in six months because noise killed focus, so she spent $12,000 soundproofing a back room. I have been stuck on this ever since because my own group of 8 is split right down the middle. Half of us love the buzz and quick chats, the other half hides in the coffee shop across the street to get real work done. Does anyone here run a hybrid setup where both sides actually feel heard, or is that just a pipe dream?

$12,000 on soundproofing sounds wild until you're the one wearing noise canceling headphones AND earplugs and still hearing Kevin's keyboard clicks from three rows over. My wallet is scared just typing that number.

Used to think 12 grand on soundproofing was insane too, especially for a startup. Then a buddy of mine went cheap on it and his recordings sounded like they were done in a tin can. Clients noticed pretty quick and he lost a few jobs over it. Bad audio kills trust way faster than bad video or design, at least in my opinion. Once you hear the difference between a properly treated room and one that's not, there's no going back. Sometimes spending the money upfront saves you way more in the long run.
