The $2,400 software renewal my client ghosted me on

Last month I renewed an annual license for a project management tool I use with clients, and one of my bigger clients in the Domain area had agreed to split the $2,400 cost. I paid upfront on my card, sent the invoice, and then they just went quiet. Three weeks later, after two voicemails and one email, I finally got a reply saying they assumed I would build the cost into my hourly rate instead. I was stuck because I had already used it for their project. I asked around at the WeWork on Congress and two other freelancers said they now make clients prepay for any software that costs over $500. Has anyone else had a client back out of a software arrangement at the last minute, and how did you handle the unpaid bill?
