The investor deck we pitched 11 times kept saying 'scalable' with zero proof
Last month I sat in on 11 pitch sessions with startups at the Capital Factory coworking space. Every single deck used the word 'scalable' but not one showed a unit economics breakdown or a customer acquisition cost number. One founder told me, 'investors just like that word,' and then couldn't answer a simple question about churn. I know from running my own SaaS tool that Austin investors here grill you on retention metrics, not buzzwords. Has anyone else seen decks fall flat because they leaned on vague terms instead of real numbers?

The worst pitch I saw was a guy who said "scalable" eleven times in ten minutes, then admitted he'd never calculated his own server costs. I get it, I used to throw that word around too, back when I was selling my own side project and hoping nobody asked the follow-up questions. But Austin investors here will let you hang yourself with a buzzword, they'll sit there and nod, then ask for your CAC and watch you freeze. Turns out "scalable" is just a fancy way of saying "I haven't figured out the math yet." I'd rather hear "we lose money on every customer but here's our plan" than that empty word one more time.
