Appreciation post: the painter at my shop who uses a $6 HF gun instead of the $700 Sata
Last Tuesday a guy from the shop down the street stopped by while I was spraying a door off a Civic and saw my Sata 5500 sitting on the bench. He laughed and said his boss makes him use a Harbor Freight gun that costs about $6 with a coupon, and I almost felt bad for him until we walked over to his bay. The clear on his last 3 jobs was flatter than mine, no orange peel, no dry spots, nothing. He said the gun is half the deal and the other half is he thins his clear a hair more than the data sheet and keeps his air at 26 psi instead of the 29 everyone parrots. I have been spraying for 11 years and spent close to $900 on guns over that time. His booth is dirty, his compressor is a 60 gallon Husky, and his work still looks better than some stuff I have seen come out of shops with $40k setups. I still like my Sata for base, but I ordered one of those cheap guns Thursday to mess around with. What is the cheapest tool in your bay that outworks the expensive one?
