Been sanding bumpers wrong for like 5 years til a old timer set me straight

I was using 80 grit on a plastic rear bumper for a 2018 Accord last Thursday and this retired guy walks by my bay and asks why I'm grinding away the texture like a madman. He showed me how 180 grit and a soft block keeps the factory grain intact so you don't have to lay on a gallon of primer. Anyone else get caught using way too coarse paper on plastic?

Oh man I feel this, I was out here thinking I was being thorough when I was really just ruining bumpers left and right like some kind of texture destroying menace.

A few years back some body shop guy told me to use denatured alcohol on plastic before painting and I'd been using wax and grease remover for years. Ended up with fisheyes on a brand new Tacoma bumper that had to be stripped and redone. Felt real dumb watching that paint spider out. Live and learn I guess.
