The magnet trick that saved my tailgate paint job

Customer brought in a Ram 1500 with a scratched tailgate, but the real issue was a paint chip that kept coming back no matter how many times I touched it up. After three attempts, I grabbed a small neodymium magnet from my toolbox and swept it along the panel. A hidden body clip was loose underneath, shifting the sheet metal slightly every time the tailgate closed. I reseated the clip, re-sprayed the chip once, and it's been solid for two weeks now. Has anyone else run into phantom paint damage caused by loose hardware underneath?
