Finally got my patio pavers to sit level after six attempts

I was out at my brother's place in Phoenix last month and watched him lay a whole path in two hours with no gaps or wobbles. Turns out I was skimping on the base layer and not renting a plate compactor. Has anyone else made that mistake or am I just stubborn?

TIL: My retaining wall needed 3 times more gravel than I planned

I was building a small retaining wall for a flower bed and figured 2 bags of gravel would be plenty. After measuring the base and doing the math, I ended up needing 6 bags just for proper drainage. Anyone else ever underestimate materials this badly on a weekend project?

Warning: My neighbor's gravel advice cost me $200

My neighbor Steve told me to use crushed limestone for my walkway because it packs down harder than regular gravel. He said he'd done it before and it looked great. I went ahead and bought 3 tons of it from the local yard in Austin, spent an entire Saturday spreading it out myself. After the first good rain, it turned into a muddy mess that stuck to everything and killed the grass along the edges. Now I have to dig it all out and start over with proper decomposed granite like I should have done from the start. Has anyone else had a neighbor steer them wrong on a backyard project like that?

That $400 pergola kit turned into a pile of twisted metal

Bought a cheap aluminum pergola off Amazon last spring cause I wanted shade for the patio without spending thousands. The thing barely survived two windstorms before the crossbars snapped and the whole frame started leaning like a drunk guy. My simple drip irrigation took 4 Saturdays to finish

Had this vision of a quick weekend project. Just run some tubing to the raised beds. Easy, right? I bought the wrong fittings twice, had to dig up a root that was in the way, and my main line kinked because I stepped on it. Four weekends later I had the whole thing working. Anyone else's "afternoon project" turn into a month long thing?

My neighbor's one comment made me rip out my entire sprinkler system

I spent 3 weekends putting in a drip irrigation setup for my flower beds (in Phoenix, no less). My neighbor Debbie walks over and says 'you know those emitters are going to clog in about 2 months with our hard water, right?' I laughed it off but after 6 weeks, half of them were already blocked up. I switched to a soaker hose system with a pressure regulator and it's been running smooth for 4 months now. Has anyone else had luck with a different solution for hard water issues in their backyard setup?

I finally gave up on a backyard project halfway through and left it for 3 weeks

I was putting in a dry creek bed along the side of my house near the downspouts, dug the whole trench and lined it with landscape fabric, then a cold snap hit here in Kansas City and I just walked away. Three weeks later the fabric was full of dead leaves and mud, and I had to dig it all out again because the edges had collapsed. Has anyone else just hit a wall on a project and left it for way longer than you meant to?

Why I ditched my store-bought compost bin for a simple pile

I spent $80 on a tumbling compost bin last spring and fought with it for 6 months... never broke down right, kept getting clogged. Then my neighbor showed me his open pile method with just a pallet frame. He had finished compost in 3 months flat, no turning required. I finally switched two months ago and the difference is night and day. The pile stays warmer and breaks down way faster without me having to crank a handle every week. Has anyone else had better luck with a simple pile over a tumbler?

Tried building a cheap paver patio last summer. Ended up ripping it all out.

I figured I'd save money by doing a paver patio myself in my backyard in Austin. Bought the pavers from a big box store and just laid them on sand like a YouTube video showed. Three months later we had a heavy rain and the whole thing shifted, weeds popping up everywhere. I spent a whole weekend pulling it apart and hired a crew to do it right with a gravel base. Has anyone else learned the hard way that cutting corners on base prep is never worth it?

Visited a community garden in Denver and noticed their rain barrel setup

I was walking through the Denver Urban Gardens space over on 38th Ave last weekend and saw how they connected three 55 gallon rain barrels together. They had them linked with simple PVC pipes and a overflow hose going into a flower bed. Has anyone tried linking multiple barrels like that for their backyard watering system?

Just noticed everyone using cheap deck screws and it drives me nuts

I was helping a neighbor redo their patio steps last weekend and saw they had those silver coated deck screws from the big box store. Three of them snapped before I could even get them in. I switched to some coated exterior screws from a local hardware shop in Denver and the difference was night and day. That was 2 days ago and I'm still thinking about how much time and money people waste on the wrong fasteners. Has anyone else dealt with stripped out screws on a project that was supposed to be simple?

Rant: My $500 paver patio cracked after one winter

I put down a 10x12 paver patio myself last August, did the gravel base, sand, the whole deal. By February I had three cracked pavers and a dip where water pools up. My neighbor did the same thing the year before and his still looks perfect. So what's the deal, is it the freeze-thaw cycle here in Ohio or did I just screw up the base? Has anyone else had a patio fall apart that fast?

Put up a $40 shade sail last spring and my patio is 15 degrees cooler now

I was getting cooked every afternoon trying to sit out back, so I grabbed a basic triangle shade sail from the local hardware store. Mounted it to two fence posts and one corner of the house over a weekend. Before that, the brick patio would hold heat until 9pm and it was miserable. After just three days with the sail up, I could actually eat dinner outside without sweating through my shirt. Anyone else try those tension kits for adjusting the sag over time?

Everyone puts in flagstone wrong and it cracks within a year

I watched three neighbors lay flagstone on just sand and dirt, and every single one had cracked stones by spring. My own patio went in with a crushed gravel base and polymeric sand, and it's held solid through two winters. Why do people skip the proper base layer when it's the only thing keeping your stones from breaking?

Cracked paver pathway after a freeze-thaw cycle here in Ohio

I laid a herringbone pattern with those big 12x24 concrete pavers last fall and it looked great until last week when three of them just split right down the middle. Turns out I didn't use polymeric sand deep enough between the joints and moisture got trapped underneath. Has anyone switched to those rubber paver base panels instead of digging out compacted gravel for a redo?

The day I finally noticed how dead my grass was from the fence shadows

I spent three years looking at my backyard thinking the grass just grows patchy in certain spots. Turns out the six-foot privacy fence I put up was blocking sun from about 4 feet of yard along the whole back edge. I only figured it out last month when I pulled up an old photo from 2021 showing the grass was fine before the fence went in. The change happened so slow I just got used to it. I measured it out and that dead strip is roughly 120 square feet of wasted space. Now I'm ripping it all out and putting down decomposed granite with some shade plants along that fence line. Has anyone else had a fence kill their lawn over a couple years without them noticing?

Picked flagstone over pavers for my patio last month - kinda regretting it now

I was set on square pavers for ages cause they're easier to lay, but my buddy convinced me flagstone looks more natural. Spent 3 weekends leveling those irregular slabs and the gaps are a nightmare to fill with gravel. Looks cool I guess, but ants keep pushing through the joints. Has anyone else tried crusher dust instead of sand to lock them in?

Talked to a landscaper who said my turf was killing the soil underneath

Was out front last week and this guy who runs a native plant crew in Austin stopped to look at my lawn. He said those rolled out grass mats create a dead zone underneath after a couple years. No air, no bugs, nothing. He wasnt being rude about it, just matter of fact. I got a soil probe and dug down 4 inches and he was right. Just lifeless clay. Made me wonder if the whole perfect green lawn thing is just a look and not actually good for anything. Has anyone here ripped out their turf for something that actually helps the ground?

Which side are you on for backyard drainage - French drains like I used to do, or dry wells like I switched to last spring?

I used to swear by French drains for my sloped yard in Portland, but after three years of them clogging up with clay soil I swapped to dry wells this April and haven't had a single puddle since... has anyone else made the switch and regretted it?

That perfect weekend I built a raised bed garden turned into a total nightmare

Last Saturday I finally got my cedar raised beds built and filled with soil, everything was going great until a 3 PM thunderstorm hit and washed half the dirt into my neighbor's driveway. Turns out I forgot to put weed barrier on the bottom of two beds so the soil just poured right through the gaps between the boards. Anybody else ruin a perfect project day because of one dumb oversight?

Remember when backyard grills were just a rusty grate over a fire pit?

I was at my uncle's place in Ohio last summer and he still cooks on this old cinder block setup he built in the 80s. It made me realize how crazy we've gotten with all these $800 stainless steel grills and pellet smokers, when a simple fire still does the job. Anyone else miss the old way of just throwing some charcoal in a pit and calling it good?

My neighbor's koi pond gave me an idea for a cheap water feature

I was over at my neighbor Dave's house in Phoenix last spring, and he had this little pond with a pump that just recirculates water. It cost him like $60 at a hardware store, nothing fancy. I went home and built one from a half wine barrel I found on Facebook Marketplace for $30, just added a small pump and some rocks. Hot take: drip irrigation is overrated for small gardens

I spent a whole weekend installing a drip system in my 200 square foot veggie patch last spring, and honestly it was a pain.
