Cracked paver pathway after a freeze-thaw cycle here in Ohio

I laid a herringbone pattern with those big 12x24 concrete pavers last fall and it looked great until last week when three of them just split right down the middle. Turns out I didn't use polymeric sand deep enough between the joints and moisture got trapped underneath. Has anyone switched to those rubber paver base panels instead of digging out compacted gravel for a redo?

Whoa wait... three of them split clean down the middle? That's crazy for 12x24 pavers.

Clean down the middle" - yeah that's usually a base issue, not a paver defect.

Elliot said cheap base prep bites you later and man, did it bite me hard (and also crack my pavers in half, which feels personal). I spent all last summer bragging about my herringbone pattern and now it looks like I installed a broken tile floor for ants. Honestly, I'm debating just filling the cracks with ramen noodles like those DIY hacks you see online, because at this point I've earned a laugh at my own expense.
