Everyone puts in flagstone wrong and it cracks within a year
I watched three neighbors lay flagstone on just sand and dirt, and every single one had cracked stones by spring. My own patio went in with a crushed gravel base and polymeric sand, and it's held solid through two winters. Why do people skip the proper base layer when it's the only thing keeping your stones from breaking?

And Steve's wife giving him crap every spring is the real kicker, because that's a reminder that lasts way longer than any cracked stone. People skip the base because they see the pretty top surface and think they can half-ass it, but Mother Nature always collects her dues eventually.

My buddy Steve out in Denver did his whole backyard on straight sand. Looked great for about three months. Then winter hit, water got under the stones, froze, and he ended up with three cracked flagstones by March. He tried to patch them but the color never matched right. Now he tells everyone who asks about patios that crushed gravel base is the only way to go. Even his wife gives him crap about it every spring when they see the cracks.
