I read that a standard lawn sprinkler system can waste over 25,000 gallons of water a summer

I found this fact in a water conservation report from the city of Phoenix. It made me rethink my plan to install an in-ground system, since that's a huge amount of water just for green grass. Has anyone switched to drip irrigation or a smart controller and seen a real drop in their water bill?

Yeah, it's wild how we just accept that as normal. I switched to a smart timer and it cut my outdoor water use almost in half.

Smart timers are a game changer, @oscarsullivan. Makes you wonder what other simple fixes we're all missing out on.

That report is scary, but the real waste happens when people set their sprinklers for the wrong type of grass. Most folks have cool-season grass but water it like it's a thirsty summer lawn. I switched to a drought-resistant grass mix and only run the system a few times a month now, not a few times a week.

Seriously, ditch the sprinklers.
