I thought those solar-powered garden lights were a complete waste of money until my neighbor's string of them lit up my whole fence line for 3 nights straight during a blackout.
I was convinced they'd be dim and die fast, but seeing them actually work when the power was out for 48 hours in Eugene changed my mind... what's a backyard upgrade you were totally wrong about at first?

My rain barrel was the same way. I figured it would just sit there full of gross water, but it kept my garden alive during that crazy dry spell last summer. @kimmurphy, maybe your lights just need a better spot to soak up the sun. Mine were useless under the tree but work great on the fence post now.
