Just realized my mulch volcano was killing my new maple
My brother-in-law, who's a landscaper in Boise, came over for a BBQ last month and pointed at my tree. He said, 'You're suffocating it with that mound of mulch right against the trunk.' I had piled it about 8 inches high, thinking more was better. I spent an afternoon pulling it all back to make a proper donut shape with a few inches of space around the base. Has anyone else had a tree look way better after fixing this?

My neighbor did that with his roses and they bounced back so fast...

Wait, @wood.faith, your neighbor cut them all the way back to the ground and they still came back? That's wild...

How tough are rose roots anyway? I heard they can survive for years underground. Makes you wonder what else is that hard to kill.
