Put in a paver patio last month, now I can't tell if the weed barrier was a waste of $60
I put in a 10x12 paver patio behind my garage in Rockford last month and skipped the weed fabric under the base because a guy at the yard said fabric just traps junk and stops drainage. Three weeks later I've got more weeds coming through the joints than my old gravel pad ever had, but I also have zero puddling after rain, which is the exact reason I skipped it in the first place. Do I rip up 40 pavers to lay fabric now, or is it smarter to just hit the joints with a pre-emergent every spring and leave the drainage alone?
Pulling 40 pavers is a weekend of work you'll hate, and fabric under the base wouldn't even fix the joint weeds. Weeds come up through the sand between pavers, not from under the base, so that fabric would just sit there doing nothing while you sweat. The guy at the yard was right about drainage, and you proved it with zero puddling. Hit the joints with pre-emergent in early spring and again in late summer, pull what slips through by hand, and keep your sand swept in tight so there's less gap for seeds to land in.
