Rant: put in a gravel fire pit area in my Tucson yard 4 years ago and now half the rocks have vanished

Back in 2021 I dug out a 10 foot circle, laid down weed fabric, and hauled in about 1,200 pounds of river rock for a fire pit spot in our Tucson backyard. Fast forward to this spring and the fabric is poking through everywhere, the rocks have sunk into the caliche soil, and my kids keep finding loose ones in the grass. Is there a base layer that actually holds up in hard desert dirt, or do I just need to top it off with more rock every few years?
