Read a blog post from 2009 about building a pond filter with a plastic bucket

That guy used a $7 bucket from Home Depot and some lava rock, and it ran for 8 years without breaking. Made me wonder if my $300 prebuilt filter is actually an upgrade or just a marketing win.

Yeah I built one with a 5 gallon bucket. Still going strong 6 years later.

Gotta disagree with you there. A 5 gallon bucket setup can work but it's not built to last unless you're really careful about water flow and aeration. Most people end up with root rot or a moldy mess after a few years, not six.
